Imagine stepping off an air-conditioned coach into an ancient landscape of red earth and eternal blue sky. An aboriginal Elder is there to meet you under the ghost-gums and ironbarks. Your guide leads you through dreamtime Australia, explaining the complex web that connects land and people.

Step back in time and enter the Australian Workers Heritage Centre, an oasis tribute to the working men and women of Australia. Later, the iconic Stockman’s Hall of Fame welcomes you in to join its celebration of outback life.

Or how does an old-fashioned campfire under glittering outback stars sound? With billy tea (or Milo) and toasted marshmallows?

The Wanpa-rda Matilda Outback Education Centre is a school excursion centre with a difference.

The first of its kind in Queensland, the centre is located in the picturesque grounds of the Australian Workers Heritage Centre. The facility provides the base from which to explore the many sites of educational significance identified in this truly unique region of Australia.

Just a day trip away are attractions such as the Australian Stockman’s Hall of Fame, the QANTAS Founders Outback Museum, the Tree of Knowledge, Blackall Woolscour and a host of other exciting educational sites. Experience life on a cattle station and other activities unique to the outback.

Explore this site to find out all that Wanpa-rda Matilda country has to offer. Check out our facilities and services, view our great all-inclusive packaged itineraries or flip through the Photo Album. You'll find a complete set of links at the bottom of this page. (go there now)

An interactive CD-ROM and curriculum resources, including activity sheets, are available to complement your visit to the Wanpa-rda Matilda Outback Education Centre.

A joint project of the Australian Workers Heritage Centre and Education Queensland.

Wanpa-rda comes from the Wangkangurru people of the Birdsville district and means ‘to carry’. Matilda comes from the Banjo Paterson song ‘Waltzing Matilda’ and refers to a bedroll or swag. So, Wanpa-rda Matilda means to carry your swag!
